I took the kids ashore and we explored the beach.

  • Still with little to no wind, we decided to motor to the north side of Oak Island which would give us good protection from the expected winds that were due to pick up in the evening.

  • The next day I went to start the engine and for the 2nd time it did not start. The batteries were too weak. I used the jump battery and it barely had enough juice left to start the engine. For the entire trip back we had to leave the engine on as we sailed as we needed the engine to dock the boat at the marina. We sailed back with the wind at our backs. Half the trip back we had light winds which later picked up to 15 knots or more which is rather strong for us.

  • A fishing boat. I think this crew was annoyed at me for not changing course even though I had the right of way.
  • We sailed right on by Bayfield and onwards to Pike's Bay Marina in 15 knot winds. We executed a few well controlled jibes and carefully planned out how to lower the sails in the strong winds so we could motor into the marina under power. We docked the 32' boat in the slip with no issues!
  • Makes me think of Robinson Crusoe.
