  1. Kayaking

BWCA by Kayak, May 2006

Becca and I did a quick 4 day BWCA trip with our kayaks, entering at Saganaga. We went west via the Ottertrack into Knife Lake along the Canadian border, a total of 23 miles one way. We turned around and came back by the same route. It was a very hot weekend, with the most memorable moment being when Becca slipped into three feet of mucky mud at Monument portage.

I know, too many pictures of my kayak.

  • We camped the first night on the Ottertrack. Kinda buggy, so Becca read inside the tent. This happens to be the same site I camped at with high school friends on my second BWCA trip back in 1998.

  • It was a gorgeous windy day (windy == no bugs) at this campsite on Knife Lake.
  • Becca is in the shade! She got too much sun, imagine that! We relaxed and read our books in our new portable sling chairs while the tarp billowed in the wind.

  • Becca gets a free ride! Trying out the new tow rope for the first time along the Ottertrack, in case we need to use it on Lake Superior when we go to the Apostle Islands over the 4th of July.

  • We took a break and were entertained by this loon swimming nearby. Shortly afterwards a scary-looking green thunderstorm with hail came through just as we reached a portage.
  • We came around a corner to find this young moose. It eyed us suspiciously for about 20 seconds, decided we were okay and went on browsing the shoreline for food.
