We didn't see anyone for a day and a half of paddling in which we covered 15 or so miles.

  • The first day we paddled up the Moose Lake chain, over Prairie portage and made it to Shade Lake via the North Bay of Basswood. A small hail storm hit us while on Bayley Bay, but it only lasted 15 minutes. The remainder of the day was partly sunny in the high 60s.
  • We couldn't find the Native American pictographs that were suppose to be on this lake, so we fished for a bit as the sun went down. We paddled by at least half a dozen cliffs on this trip which are suppose to have pictographs, and we never once definitively saw any.
  • We had Shade Lake all to ourselves and there was no wind at all, which combined for what I think was the quietest night I have ever experienced. The only sound I could hear was the hoot of a Great Horned Owl in the distance.
  • The second day of our Quetico trip we paddled to Silence Lake and camped on an island. We caught a smallmouth and cooked it up for a yummy meal.

  • We started early on the third day and made our way into Agnes Lake. We paddled towards the northern end of Agnes and chose a campsite around 9:00 am since we had to begin heading back the next day and had a ways to go.
  • This spruce grouse was near our camp, flying in a triangle for the entire afternoon in some sort of mating ritual, even though there wasn't a female anywhere nearby. We walked within 30 feet. It completely ignored us and at one point the grouse flew within 10 feet of us.

  • My favorite photo from the trip, here is Becca making water before bed, a nightly task that we always do so we have water in the morning.
  • The fourth day we paddled the entire length of Agnes, some 12 plus miles. It was windy, with whitecaps in areas, with on and off rain. Luckily, the wind was with us. In the evening and during the night it snowed. Here is snow on a spruce branch the next morning as we paddled out.
