Bryce held the canoe at each portage while we loaded it. Canoeing with a kevlar is much different than an aluminum which can be paddled right up onto rocks.

  • Driving up to Ely
  • Lunch at Amy's Cafe. We got Hot Chocolates!
  • Launching from Moose Lake. We took a shuttle by boat to Indian Portage saving us 2 hours of paddling.
  • Paddling Birch Lake. The shuttle only took about 10 minutes and we were paddling by 9:20 am!

  • Hammock time!
  • Maddie helped me set up the tent each day.
  • Making traps with rope and carabiners.
  • Gazing at Isle of Pines across from our campsite where the Root Beer Lady lived for 50 years or so.

  • We ventured out to the Isle of Pines where Dorothy Molter the Root Beer Lady lived for about 50 years. We had read about this special magnetite rock in a book about her on the drive up the day before. It is magnetic, as shown when you put your compass close to it.
  • Still exploring the Isle of Pines. We were ready to stop since I couldn't find a trail, but then Maddie insisted and found the trail!
