  1. Backpacking

Superior Hiking Trail, Sept. 2006

I did a solo backpack on the Superior Hiking Trail during the last weekend in September. I was dropped off by the Superior Shuttle at Caribou River wayside and hiked southwest to my car at County Road 4 in Beaver Bay, covering 50 miles in 2 and a half days. Fall colors were peaking. While this was primarily a backpacking trip, it was my first trip with my new Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. I was constantly torn on whether to spend time taking pictures or covering ground on the trail. During the latter half of this trip I covered what is widely considered the most scenic and most difficult section of the SHT.

Mount Trudee.

  • Exhausted, near mile 22 for the day at 6:00, I hit the top of Mount Trudee at just the right time. The sunlight lit up the colorful leaves. Camp was yet another mile or so in the distance.

  • Several ravens played in the wind directly above me. Where is my 75-300 mm lens!! All three campsites were taken, so I setup my tarp in the dark near a family that was from Lake Elmo.
  • The next morning I had 10 miles to go. The cliffs and views over Bear and Bean Lake are tremendous.
  • Leaves constantly became stuck to my trekking poles.
  • The final rest between Silver Bay and Beaver Bay, 3 miles from my car. I finished at 11:30.
