Superior Hiking Trail, Sept. 2006
I did a solo backpack on the Superior Hiking Trail during the last weekend in September. I was dropped off by the Superior Shuttle at Caribou River wayside and hiked southwest to my car at County Road 4 in Beaver Bay, covering 50 miles in 2 and a half days. Fall colors were peaking. While this was primarily a backpacking trip, it was my first trip with my new Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. I was constantly torn on whether to spend time taking pictures or covering ground on the trail. During the latter half of this trip I covered what is widely considered the most scenic and most difficult section of the SHT.

I came into this clearing at 9:15 in the morning to see a moose up close, 30 feet away. Believe me, it was standing there 5 seconds before I took this picture. It bolted into the woods.
