  1. Backpacking

Superior Hiking Trail, Sept. 2006

I did a solo backpack on the Superior Hiking Trail during the last weekend in September. I was dropped off by the Superior Shuttle at Caribou River wayside and hiked southwest to my car at County Road 4 in Beaver Bay, covering 50 miles in 2 and a half days. Fall colors were peaking. While this was primarily a backpacking trip, it was my first trip with my new Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. I was constantly torn on whether to spend time taking pictures or covering ground on the trail. During the latter half of this trip I covered what is widely considered the most scenic and most difficult section of the SHT.

  • I made little progress the first few hours as I played with my camera. Eventually I started moving at a 3 mile an hour pace since I was planning on doing 17 miles before the sun would set at 6:30.
  • At 5:00 I stopped at Sonju Lake on a small island and switched modes from backpacking to photography.

  • At Sonju Lake. 2.5 miles more to go, less than an hour before dark, and I am still taking pictures.
  • My camp at Lake Egge Friday night. I arrived here at 6:00. It was fully dark at 7:00. I cooked and ate dinner, made water, set up the tarp and bivy sack, hung my food, and was asleep by 8:00.
  • An old bear den. I got off to a late start, not hitting the trail until 8:00 am. Today I covered 23 miles, over the most scenic and topographically challenging sections of the trail.
  • A small dead garter snake.
  • I came into this clearing at 9:15 in the morning to see a moose up close, 30 feet away. Believe me, it was standing there 5 seconds before I took this picture. It bolted into the woods.
  • The trail is marked with these signs and the new way of marking the trail is with blue paint on trees and all over the rocks. The Superior Hiking trail is considerably overmarked. The majority of the markings are ridiculous for such a well trod trail.
  • Boardwalks keep the feet dry, but can be dangerously slippy.
  • A huge boulder in the middle of the lowlands. It was deposited by a glacier a long time ago.
  • I saw twenty some grouse on this trip. Too bad I didn't have my 75-300mm lens .. or my shotgun.
