  • Day 7: When you take off your wet shoes at camp you have to improvise to avoid walking around barefoot.
  • Day 7: I met Lumberjack, who was cruising through to the north shortly before dark. We exchanged trail knowledge, such as "the last 3 miles are a bitch" and "when the trail disappears due to a washout, just go straight down the mountain until you hit the trail again."
  • Day 8: Glacier Peak. This was the toughest day as far as difficult terrain. It started out with 3 miles straight down to a creek bed and then 4 or more miles straight up from the creek bed to Fire Creek Pass.
  • Day 8: A damaged bridge, which I opted not to take.
  • Day 8: Instead of the bridge I hopped across these rocks, which I just barely made without getting wet
  • Day 8: After crossing I had to climb a steep brushy embankment to get back to the trail. There were another six or so creeks and rivers like this. I was able to utilize fallen logs across all of them.

  • Day 8: I met 2 more thru-hikers at this lake.
  • Day 8: A view of the trail I just came down, switchbacking down the mountainside. Note the lack of trees along the switchbacks, which meant it was horribly overgrown with brush and plants, which means wet feet.
  • Day 8: Glacier Peak was in a constant view throughout the day.
  • Day 8: Resting briefly at the top of Fire Creek pass. From here I called my wife and my brother on my satellite phone.
  • Day 8: Looking behind me from Fire Creek Pass. I had views 360 degrees around me.

  • Day 8: Glacier Peak.

  • Day 9: White Chuck Cinder Cone (a volcano).
  • Day 9: It was a relief to join up with the detour at Indian Pass. The trail was considerably better today than the last two days and I made great time.
  • Day 9: I had another bear encounter this day. Two cubs and a small mama bear at about 30 yards in a huckleberry patch. The trail was going up and so they were above me a bit. The cubs took off and I yelled a bit at the mama bear and she moved away too
